Jakarta (VNA) – Vietnam has sent six female athletes to take part in a test competition of kurash (Turkish wrestling), one of official sports of the 18th Asian Games (ASIAD 18), which is slated for next August in Indonesia.
The event took place in Jakarta, Indonesia, on May 5 and 6, gathering athletes from eight countries and territories – the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Taiwan (China), Afghanistan, Vietnam, India, Iran, and Indonesia.
Eric Thohir, head of the ASIAD 18 Organising Committee, said the test competition is to examine the sport’s preparations and rules in practice as it is the first time kurash has been chosen for the regional sports gala.
At ASIAD, the sport will be open for both male and female athletes, Do Ngoc Hung, coach of Vietnam’s kurask team, told Vietnam News Agency.
He noted the six Vietnamese female athletes will compete in the 52kg, 63kg, and 78kg events.
More than 200 Vietnamese athletes will compete in 20 of the 40 sports in ASIAD 2018, including football, karate, wushu and pencak silat.
They aim to bring home from three to five gold medals in key sports, such as athletics, swimming, weightlifting, shooting and gymnastics.-VNA
