The Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRCS) will launch a programme entitled “The Strength of Humanity” on January 13 to call for support to the underprivileged ahead of the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival, according to VRCS Vice President Tran Thi Hong Anh.

Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRCS) will launch a programmeentitled “The Strength of Humanity” on January 13 to call for support to the underprivilegedahead of the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival, according to VRCS Vice PresidentTran Thi Hong Anh.

Theprogramme, to be broadcast live on the Vietnam Television, will see the auctionof a football and a jersey bearing the signatures of all players and members ofthe coaching board of the male Vietnam national team who won the AFF Suzuki Cup2018 recently.

Theyare gifts that the team presented to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc who handedover them to the VRSC for auction to raise fund for the poor and AgentOrange/dioxin (AO) victims on the occasion of Tet.

Manyagencies and enterprises have registered to support the programme, while the chaptersof the VRSC in cities and provinces nationwide have also planned to presentmore than 2 million Tet gifts to the poor and AO victims.

Theprogramme, themed “Tet for the poor and AO victims,” targets to provide atleast 1.5 million Tet gifts for the poor, AO victims, policy beneficiaries aswell as families affected by natural disasters. The VRCS Central Committee willprovide 100,000 Tet gifts worth 7.2 billion VND (309,600 USD) to 42 provincesand cities across the country.

Amobile message campaign has been held as part of the programme to call for supportfrom the society. By texting TET to 1407 from December 15, to February 14,2019, a mobile service subscriber will contribute 20,000 VND to help the poor.

Onthe occasion, the VRCS Central Committee will also honour 40 collectives andindividuals who have accompanied with the agency in conducting humanitarian andcharity activities in 2018.

The“Tet for the poor and AO victims” movement has been launched since 1999. Sofar, the campaign has raised 6.7 trillion VND (288.1 million USD) to support morethan 22 million disadvantaged people and AO victims during the traditional Tet festival.-VNA

Two wanted for abusing religious cover to undermine national unity policy

The fugitives are Di (also known as Siu Di), born in 1941, and Dinh Yum (also known as Dinh Jum or Ba Koih), born in 1963, from Ba Na ethnic minority group in Gia Lai province, and hold Vietnamese nationality. They have been charged under Clause 1, Article 116 of the Penal Code for undermining the national unity policy.

Support delivered to Khmer households for traditional New Year

The province's delegation of National Assembly deputies, in coordination with relevant agencies, presented 600 gifts across 11 communes, including 100 in Tap Son commune and 50 in each of the others. The programme, worth 300 million VND (11,300 USD), was funded by Agribank’s Vinh Long branch.
