Although businesses faced lots of difficulties derived from the global economic recession in 2009, the average monthly salary of labourers reached over 2.8 million VND (150 USD) per head in 2009, up 10 percent from the previous year.
At a press conference in Hanoi on January 8, Tong Thi Minh, Director of the Department of Labour and Salary Affairs under the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, said that the average salaries of workers in all forms of businesses increased last year, with the privately-owned sector leading with nearly an 11 percent increase. It was followed by the foreign-invested sector with close to a 10 percent rise and the State-owned sector with over a 7 percent increase.
Minh attributed salary boosts to the Government’s series of economic stimulus packages helping businesses with stable production output and expansion.
The southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau reported the highest average salary of 4.3 million VND (230 USD) per month.
However, low salaries roughly 650,000 VND (34 USD) were still seen in 10 provinces, including Bac Kan, Lao Chau, Quang Ninh, Hoa Binh, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Ngai, Gia Lai and Tay Ninh.
In appreciation to last year’s prosperity, most businesses plan to give bonuses to labourers during the Tet (Lunar New Year) festival. The average bonus will be some 1.85 million VND (roughly 100 USD), an increase of 300,000 VND against last year.
A notable difference in bonuses are handed out during Tet, citing the highest bonus of 389 million VND (20,500 USD)–up 59 million VND from last year’s Tet–within the foreign-investor sector to the privately-owned sector with the lowest bonus of only 30,000 VND (nearly 1.6 USD)./.
