Construction of a Buddhist statue, the biggest of its kind in northern Vietnam , was kicked off at Dong Kien pagoda in Phu Tho province on January 9.
The statue of Buddha sitting in lotus position is expected to be 23 metres high, surrounded by the 6m-high standing statues of his 10 main disciples.
The concrete and steel statue costs an estimated 10 billion VND (about 480,000 USD), to be sourced from donations by Buddhist followers inside and outside Vietnam .
The construction of the statue is undertaken by the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and Phu Tho Buddhist Association.-VNA
