According to “The History of Hanoian” by Ha An, Do Son buffalo fighting festival has long been conducted within the region, at least since the Tran Dynasty.

Do Son buffalo fighting festival unify the elements of two distinct cultures: the agricultural plain and the coastal residents.

The festival is unique on its own, by associating the worshipping of the Water God with the fight and sacrifice of buffaloes, which signifies the cultural and spiritual identity of the coastal folks trying to make a living while facing the sea and storms./.
