Vietnamese businesses should closely obey US market regulations and requirements to minimise the risk of being blocked by anti-dumping and anti-subsidy barriers.
The advice was heard at a seminar on US regulations on food and pharmaceutical product management held in Ho Chi Minh City on July 19 by the city’s Investment and Trade Promotion Centre.
According to Chitra Ananda, chief representative of the US Registrar Corp in Singapore and Malaysia, it is important to abide by the regulations of the country’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA). She said the main reasons why products are seized are incorrect ways of writing labels and disallowed materials.
The US is one of the three biggest markets for seven out of Vietnam’s 14 main export commodities. In the first four months of 2013, Vietnam’s exports to the US enjoyed a year-on-year increase of 15.01 percent, mainly from garments and textiles, aquatic products and timber.
However, Vietnam has faced nine anti-dumping lawsuits since 2002 and four anti-subsidy cases in the 2009-2013 period, predominately against key exports like tra and basa fish, frozen shrimp, plastic bags and steel piping.-VNA
