Cambodia’s National Election Committee (NEC) on August 12 released the preliminary results of the fifth general election held on July 28, affirming the victory of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP).
Accordingly, the total popular vote was 3,236,009 for the CPP and 2,945,676 for the main opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRPP), with the remaining going to six other parties.
Analysts said that with the largest number of votes, the CPP gains the majority in the parliament and will continue its ruling.
NEC General Secretary Tep Nytha said complaints against the results must be filed within 72 hours and the official results will be officially confirmed before September 8.
Earlier, the CPP claimed they won 68 seats of the assembly’s 123 seats, against 55 for the CNRP while the opposition said it got 63 seats in the parliament.
Following the NEC’s announcement, the CNRP said the party will organise a press briefing on the results.-VNA
