Cambodia has asked Thailand to postpone indefinitely the GeneralBorder Committee (GBC) meeting scheduled for August 27-28 in Bangkok.
Thai defence spokesman Col Thanathip Sawangsaengsaid on August 11 that as scheduled, the meeting will be jointly chairedby the Defence Ministers of the two countries.
According tothe spokesperson, Cambodia's decision to postpone the GBC meetingmight be a result of the border tension over the Hindu Preah Viheartemple.
Earlier, on July 29, the United NationsEducational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation's (UNESCO) WorldHeritage Committee (WHC) decided to reschedule its discussion onCambodia's management plan for the Preah Vihear temple to its 35thannual meeting in Bahrain in 2011.
Prior to the WHCdecision to postpone its discussion, Thailand threatened to walk outof the WHC meeting if the panel considered the Cambodian plan since theThai side had not yet looked into details of the plan.
Thailand and Cambodia have historically laid claim to the site,which is located on a mountain top on the Thai-Cambodia border. Thedisputed area of 4.6 square kilometres has not been demarcated.
TheInternational Court of Justice’s judgment in 1962 said the temple,which was built in the 11th century, was situated in territory underthe sovereignty of Cambodia./.
