Cambodia’s Interior Ministry has issued a notice calling on local authorities to keep the public informed of the national political and security situation over the past time so that upcoming political activities will take place in a smooth and orderly manner.

In the notice released on September 19, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Kheng stressed post-election complaints have been solved and senior leaders of the two related parties are continuing to deal with existing problems. While calling for the public to maintain social security and order, the minister asked local authorities to adopt timely measures to suppress any extreme acts which attempt to incite riots and destabilise the social order.

The same day, the Standing Committee on election security informed that King Norodom Sihamoni sent a summon order to lawmakers of the Cambodia’s People Party and the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), inviting them to attend the first session of the new legislature slated for September 23.

However, the CNRP sent a letter to the King also on September 19, declaring it would not attend the scheduled opening session unless an acceptable deal is reached between it and the Cambodia People’s Party (CPP).

CPP and CNRP have ended negotiations since September 17 without progress. Date for the next meeting has yet to be set.

Meanwhile, the CPP confirmed their elected lawmakers will attend the first session of the new legislature.
Also on September 19, over 100 Buddhist monks in support of CNRP called on the King to postpone the first session of the new parliament.-VNA
