Vice President of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) Kem Sokha will take up a seat as first Vice President of the National Assembly (NA) in its fifth tenure.
The news was released after the CNRP and the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) reached an agreement to end the year-long political deadlock following the national election in July 2013, at their high-top talks on July 22.
The two parties concurred to share power in the legislative body with the ruling CPP holding the positions of the President and the second Vice President while the CNRP taking up the position of the first Vice President. Each party will hold the chair of five committees in the NA.
In a move to facilitate the implementation of the agreement, eight CNRP members, who were arrested on charge of holding a violent protest on July 15, were released. The Freedom Park in Phnom Penh was also reopened to the public.
According to CNRP spokesperson Yim Sovann, 55 members of the opposition party who succeeded in the general election in last July, will take an oath at the Royal Palace in the presence of King Norodom Sihamoni on July 24.-VNA
