Cambodia’s National Election Committee (NEC) on August 9 called on the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and the main opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) to join a committee set up to investigate alleged irregularities in the country’s July 28 general election.
NEC stressed that CPP and CNRP need to join the committee in order to create a transparent working mechanism.
The committee’s request was made after Cambodia 's King Norodom Sihamoni called on the ruling party and the opposition party to continue with dialogue to seek a peaceful solution to issues arising after the election.
At the meeting between NEC, CPP and CNRP on August 3, the sides agreed to set up a joint committee to investigate allegations of wrongdoings in the national poll with observers being representatives from social organisations and the United Nations.
However, just hours after the meeting, CNRP refused to take part in the committee and requested setting up an independent committee, where the UN will act as a coordinator.
On August 8, NEC said most complaints during the poll were amicably settled. The committee affirmed that it is making every effort to complete entrusted responsibility.-VNA
