Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on July 31 announced that his ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) is ready to talk with the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) on the establishment of a new parliament.
PM Hun Sen told reporters during his first public appearance since the election that his Party has established a working group, including Cambodia’s Interior Minister Sar Kheng, Deputy Prime Minister and cabinet minister Sok An, and Vice President of the Senate Say Chhum to negotiate with the CNRP.
He said the CPP also acclaims the establishment of a joint committee to investigate allegations of irregularities during the election, adding that the investigation must be carried out by the country’s National Election Committee (NEC) with the participation of representatives from the country’s political parties and the election observers.
The CPP’s action aims to not only create stability and peace for Cambodia but also avoid conflicts and insecurities which are able to endanger the country’s people and society.
According to the initial unofficial results of the country’s poll on July 28, the CPP won the victory with 68 parliamentary seats while the CNRP got the remaining 55 seats.
However, the CNRP did not recognise the results, claiming widespread fraud. It has also threatened to stage demonstrations nationwide on August 4.-VNA
