Cambodia names capital's 20 jewels

Cambodia has classified 20 sites in Phnom Penh as capital's jewels due to their old structures with some of them dating back to nearly 600 years ago.
Cambodia has classified 20 sites in Phnom Penh as capital's jewels due to their old structures with some of them dating back to nearly 600 years ago.

The classification was announced by Phnom Penh Government on Jan. 6. The classified sites included Phnom Doun Penh, the only high hill in the capital where is known as the Ground Zero for distance measuring from the capital to elsewhere across the country.

Phnom Doun Penh is the symbol of Phnom Penh which dates back 578 years ago.

There is also the Royal Palace which used to be the residence of former King Norodom Sihanouk and his wife Queen Monineath Sihanouk and is now of the current King Norodom Sihamoni. The Royal Palace was built in 1890.

Other sites include the Railway Station, the Royal Hotel, Phsar Thom Thmey market (Central Market), the Independence Monument, the Ministry of Justice building, Cambodia's Supreme Court, National Museum, UNESCO office, and Office of the Capital city of Phnom Penh, among others.

Phnom Penh is one of the four most popular tourist destinations in Cambodia . The others are Angkor Wat Temple in Siem Reap province, the coastal resort of Sihanoukville, and the eco-tourism zone in the northeastern provinces of Rattanakiri and Mondulkiri.

The announcement of these 20 jewels is among activities to promote the country’s image, as Cambodia is serving its tenure of ASEAN’s chair./.
