Cambodia has made remarkable achievements in the cause of promoting women’s rights during the last 20 years, said the country’s Prime Minister Hun Sen on the occasion of the International Women’s Day (March 8).
The Prime Minister added that Cambodian women's status has been improved in all fields, including economy, society, and politics, in line with the Declaration and Platform for Action adopted at the fourth world conference on women in Beijing in 1995, to which Cambodia is a signatory.
According to Cambodian Minister of Women's Affairs Ing Kantha Phavi, Cambodian women have benefited from peace, political stability, strong national economic growth, poverty reduction and the promotion of public services over the last 20 years.
The participation of women in the economy is increasing and gender equality in the education sector has been ensured, she added.
However, women in Cambodia are still facing many challenges, including low enrollments in higher education, high maternal mortality in comparison to other countries in the region, domestic violence and trafficking, she said.-VNA
