Cambodia and Thailand have reached agreement on the maintenance of peace along the two countries’ border regardless of the International Court of Justice (ICJ)’s decisions on the territorial dispute near Preah Vihear ancient temple.
At a meeting with UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, who is in Cambodia for the 37 th session of the World Heritage Committee, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister cum Foreign Minister Hor Namhong said his country had submitted the dispute case to ICJ in April 2011 in seeking ways for peace.
ICJ is scheduled to release their decision on which country has sovereignty over the disputed area later this year.
No matter what the decision will be, Cambodia and Thailand will comply with it and maintain friendly cooperation and security along the borderline, the Cambodian official said.
Expressing her pleasure with the deal, Bokova highlighted the two sides’ solution in accordance with the UNESCO principle of protecting world heritages.
Armed conflicts with many casualties have occurred near the ancient temple since it was recognised as a world heritage in July 2008.-VNA
