Cambodian and Thai officials met in Phnom Penh on July 26 to discuss possibilities to re-boost the two countries’ investment cooperation, which has been interrupted due to border conflict since 2008.
Speaking at the meeting, Kong Vibol, Vice-Chairman of the Cambodian Council for the Development, said since 1993, Thailand has been one of the largest investors in Cambodia . However, due to the conflict, the country has been surpassed by China , the Republic of Korea and Vietnam . Thailand now ranks eighth with a total capital of 746 million USD.
He said as the situation now has returned to normal, it is time for both sides to restore investors’ confidence.
He also highlighted investment potential in Cambodia , especially in the fields of agriculture, agro-industry, infrastructure, labour-intensive industry, export industry, oil and gas, mining, and tourism.
Thailand sent to the meeting a delegation of 30 members from various ministries and sectors, aiming to study Cambodia 's investment policy and potential sectors.
Cambodia and Thailand have had border conflict just a week after the UNESCO regconised the Preah Vihear temple, which locates in the two countries’ shared border, as a World Heritage Site on July 07, 2008.
