A grand ceremony was held in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh on January 7 to celebrate the 31st anniversary of the Cambodian people’s victory over the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime.
The historic event, which took place at the headquarters of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), brought together thousands of ordinary Cambodian along with CPP President cum Senate President Chea Sim, Prime Minister Hun Sen and National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin, amongst others.
On addressing the celebrations, CPP President Chea Sim recalled the Cambodian people’s heroic and hard struggle to overthrow the Khmer Rouge regime to revive and restore the country with enormous socio-political and economic gains.
He affirmed that the Cambodian people always embedded in their hearts the invaluable assistance of the Vietnamese voluntary soldiers and people, who, under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, had promptly responded to Cambodia's appeal for overthrowing genocide and protecting the country's revival.
He emphasised that the Cambodian people should exert more effort in 2010 to boost economic growth, reduce poverty and maintain peace, stability and national reconciliation.
The CPP President also confirmed that his party has always supported the Cambodian Royal Government’s attempts to implement the Law on Financial Reform, an important tool for creating national development policies.
Chea Sim reiterated that the CPP has backed the Extraordinary Chambers of the Courts of Cambodia’s (ECCC) trial against Khmer Rouge criminals but has opposed attempts to use the ECCC for purposes that affect peace, national reconciliation and development.
In his speech, Chea Sim said that the CPP hoped for a successful demarcation and planting of border markers along their border with Vietnam and Laos .
He said that the CPP condemned actions that prevented the demarcation and the planting of border markers that had been taken.
On the occasion, the CPP President emphasised the Party’s constant support for the Cambodian Royal Government’s stance regarding normalising diplomatic ties with Thailand and seeking a peaceful solution to the border issue with its neighbour in a bid to build the two countries’ border into the one of peace, friendship, cooperation and development.
The CPP continues to support Prime Minister Hun Sen as the Head of the Cabinet in the forthcoming term./.
