Cambodia reported 44 landmine casualties in the first four months of 2013, down 48 percent from 85 cases in the same period last year, according to a report released by the Cambodian Government on June 3.
In the reviewed period, four people were killed and 40 others injured by landmines, compared to the 2012 same period’s 19 and 66 cases respectively.
According to the report, since 1979, some 19,666 people have been killed by landmines and 44,581 others injured or amputated.
Cambodia is one of the nations that suffer badly from landmines. An estimated 4 million to 6 million landmines and other munitions are left over from three decades of war and internal conflicts that ended in 1998.
In 2012, the country cleared and defused about 3 million landmines and unexploded ordnances. It is expected to completely eliminate landmines by 2020.-VNA
