The Cambodian Government has warned it may take measure against opposition leader Sam Rainsy for insulting King Norodom Sihamoni.
In a statement issued on April 5, the Cambodia Government said Sam Rainsy’s remarks in a letter to the King have violated the country’s law and the inviolable reputation of the King.
The statement was made after Sam Rainsy sent a letter to King Sihamoni on April 2, saying that the current Cambodia National Assembly does not represent the entire Cambodian people because it only has lawmakers from the Cambodian People's Party (CPP). His letter was thought to be a reaction against the King’s royal message dated April 1 on the occasion of the opening of the fifth National Assembly, in which the King expressed his hope that the legislature will take on the challenges to ensure peace, stability, security, social order and sustainable development for the country.
Earlier on April 4, the Cambodia National Assembly also reacted strongly to Sam Rainsy’s letter, saying that it seriously hurt the King’s supreme role.
Sam Rainsy and his Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) has boycotted parliament since September after the July election results showed that the CPP won 68 parliamentary seats against 55 seats for the CNRP.
Claiming election irregularities, CNRP has also staged demonstrations demanding investigation or a reelection, along with deep electoral reform.-VNA
