President of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) Sam Rainsy has called on Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni to help resolve the dispute over the July 28 election, the national press said on September 4.
In a letter on September 2, Sam Rainsy asked for the King’s intervention to find a solution for the irregularities in the election in a manner of transparency and justice that meets the Cambodian people’s aspiration.
One day later, the King said he had received the CNRP’s leader’s letter, but did not say if he will do as requested.
According to the initial election results announced by the nation’s National Election Committee (NEC), the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won the poll with 68 of the 123 parliamentary seats, and the CNRP took the remaining 55 seats.
As scheduled, the official election results will be released on September 8, after the Constitutional Council of Cambodia (CCC) resolves the poll dispute.
The CCC accepted the CNRP’s proposal on opening official election documents at several polling stations to verify the results. However, the verification showed that the results recorded at the polling stations were not different from the initial results announced.
The CNRP declared that it will hold a masive demonstration on September 7 if an independent committee is not formed to look into the irregularities, and the Phnom Penh City authorities have allowed it to go ahead nonviolently at the Freedom Park in the city.-VNA
