An official from Cambodia’s Prey Veng province – a densely populated agricultural region - has expressed his hope of receiving support from Vietnam’s southern Long An province in a wide range of fields.

Governor Has Saren extended his wish at a working session with Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Do Huu Lam in Long An on March 4, during which they informed each other of the socio-economic situations in the respective localities.

The Vietnamese official told his guest that his province saw an economic growth of 11 percent, and the average GDP per capita was estimated at 40 million VND (1,900 USD) in 2013. The locality harvested 2.8 million tonnes of rice during the year just gone, he noted.

Both provinces have seen positive outcomes in their bonds thanks to the one-year-old bilateral cooperation agreement. Specifically, a pair of auxiliary border gates, Tan Hung in Long An province and Svay A Ngong in the Kampong Trabaek district of Prey Veng province, were inaugurated last July.

Medical check-ups and treatments have been offered to over 1,000 residents in their shared border areas and Vietnamese-language training courses have been arranged for Cambodian officials and students.

Long An authorities supported a Cambodian suggestion to construct a bridge connecting Tan Hung and Svay A Ngong, as well as increasing assistance in power, agriculture, health and border security.

Has Saren on March 3 led a Cambodian delegation to visit a large-scale paddy field in the Tan Dong commune of Thanh Hoa district, a rice farm in Hoa Phu and a dragon fruit garden in Chau Thanh.

Long An shares a 132 km border with Cambodia’s Prey Veng and Svay Rieng provinces, including a 13 km river border crossing between the districts of Tan Hung and Kampong Trabaek.-VNA
