The Cambodian Government will provide at least 12,000 USD to each of 351 deaths during a stampede at the recent water festival in Phnom Penh capital city.
Prime Minister Hun Sen made this commitment on Nov. 29, adding that so far, the King, the government, the Cambodian Red Cross, and the owner of the Diamond Island had donated nearly 3,800 USD to each family of the victims.
The government has negotiated with ACLEDA Bank to open bank accounts for the families of the victims to deposit the cash donation in order to avoid robberies.
He also requested good treatment for the 395 injured people at the festival and said if they are critical the government will pay for them to get treatment abroad, such as in Vietnam or Thailand.
Hun Sen expressed thanks to the Cambodian people for joining hands to help victims of the stampede and also thanked friends around the world for their concern and assistance.
He said that no one would be punished after the incident but the government will take strong measures to prevent a recurrence of the tragedy.
PM Hun Sen said the water festival will be celebrated as usual in coming years as it is a major national event and the Koh Pich (diamond) island will be developed into a residential and trade area following a planned programme.
He also said the government plans to use the island as a venue for the upcoming meeting of political parties slated for Dec. 1-4./.
