Cambodian parliamentarians from the ruling and opposition parties on August 26 voted for new leadership in the legislative body.
Vice President of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) Kem Sokha was elected the first Vice President of the National Assembly, while Ngon Nhel from the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) became the second Vice President.
The confidential vote was to realise an agreement reached by the two parties on July 22 on sharing power in the parliament in an effort to end political deadlocks after the CNRP rejected the election results on July 28 last year and boycotted the legislative body.
Under the deal, each party will lead five commissions in the National Assembly, with the newly established Commission on Investigation and Anti-Corruption to be controlled by the CNRP.-VNA
