The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) claimed victory in the fifth general election which took place on July 28.
Preliminary results show that the CPP gained 68 seats and the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) got the remaining 55 seats in the polls, said Khieu Kanharith, spokesman for the government and the CPP.
The official results from the National Election Committee (NEC) are still unavailable by far. According to the constitution, the first session of the new National Assembly will be convened no later than 60 days after the elections.
Cambodia holds a general election every five years. In the last election in July 2008, the CPP won 90 seats out of the 123 seats in the National Assembly, the Sam Rainsy Party gained 26 seats, the Human Rights Party got 3 seats and the royalist group Funcinpec won 2 seats. The Sam Rainsy Party in 2012 merged with the Human Rights Party into the Cambodian National Rescue Party.-VNA
