Bangkok (VNA) – Candidates for Thailand’s general election began their registrations on April 3.

In Bangkok, which has 33 constituencies and holds the most parliamentary seats, most of the key leaders and candidates from major Thai political parties were present at the Keelawes building 2 in the Thailand-Japan Stadium in Din Daeng district.

Candidates are allowed to register by the end of April 7 to prepare for the general election that will take place on May 14.

Currently, neither Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha nor his strong opponent, Paetongtarn Shinawatra - one of the opposition Pheu Thai party’s top politicians, have not registered to run for the House of Representatives seat. However, the Thai Constitution stipulates that a political party that wins at least 25 seats in the House of Representatives will have the right to nominate a candidate for the premiership. Earlier, the United Thai Nation (UTN) Party officially nominated Prayut to be the party's number one candidate for the post in the upcoming general election.

To become the prime minister in the next term, the candidate will have to win at least 376 votes of the 500 MPs and 250 senators./.
