Senior officials from China and Laos have agreed to cooperate more on security issues on the Mekong River to crack down on cross-border crime, according to China ’s state news agency Xinhua.
The agreement was reached between China’s State Councillor and Minister of Public Security Meng Jianzhu and Lao Minister of Public Security Thongbanh Sengaphone on September 5 during the latter’s visit to China .
Xinhua quoted Meng as saying that China and Laos should raise their level of cooperation on security issues on the river to ensure a stable and peaceful environment, so the region can develop economically and people's livelihoods are safeguarded.
Bilateral cooperation can be implemented in the border management, illegal immigration curbing, drug and human trafficking combat as well as investigations and the repatriation of criminals, Meng was quoted as saying.
Thongbanh Sengaphone reportedly added that Laos is keen to work closer with China to promote security cooperation and combat transnational crimes.
Both officials signed a number of cooperation documents after their talks, said the agency.
In October 2011, China and Laos , together with Myanmar and Thailand, agreed at a meeting in Beijing to take more joint actions to combat cross-border crimes and ensure the safety of traffic along the Mekong river.-VNA
