China’s National Meteorological Center (NMC) on July 19 continued a top-level red alert for super typhoon Rammasun as downpours and gales sweep southern coastal provinces.
According to China’s Xinhua news agency, Typhoon Rammasun, believed to be the strongest to hit south China in 41 years, made its third landfall in Guangpo, Fangchenggang city, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on July 19 morning.
Earlier on July 18, typhoon Rammasun made a second landfall in Zhanjiang city in south China 's Guangdong province four hours after the first.
The typhoon landed in Longtangzhen in Xuwen County in Zhanjiang, packing gales of 60 metres per second. Xuwen County, on the southernmost tip of the Chinese mainland, is more than 800 km from the provincial capital Guangzhou.
As of July 18 night, Rammasun had wreaked havoc across Guangdong and Hainan provinces, killing at least one in Wenchang and forcing more than 20,000 out of their homes in Hainan province’s capital of Haikou, according to local authorities.
The NMC also forecast moderate to heavy rain in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, northeast China and north China from July 20-21.
Earlier, Rammasun wreaked havoc in the Philippines , killing 64 locals and injuring 103 others.-VNA
