Mexico’s National Assembly Standing Committee has urged China to settle tensions in the East Sea through peaceful talks and in line with international law, after Beijing illegally anchored the drilling rig Haiyang Shiyou-981 in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf in early May.

According to Sebastian Alfonso de la Rosa Pelaez, a parliamentarian of the Mexican Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), Vietnam has repeatedly protested China’s illegal acts, stressing that China has violated the spirit of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) it signed with ASEAN countries in 2002 and the ASEAN’s six-point principles on the settlements of the issues on the East Sea.

He said Vietnam has asked China to withdraw its oil rig and escort ships from Vietnam’s waters and Vietnam has full legal historical evidence to prove Hoang Sa (Paracel) Archipelago belongs to the country.
He warned that the tension in the East Sea is on the rising trend following the incident, which may escalate instability affecting the region and the world.

On July 8 China mobilised an electronic reconnaissance plane to oversee the operation of Vietnamese law enforcement ships in the area that China is illegally placing its oil rig, reported the Vietnam Fisheries Surveillance Department.

It still kept 106 ships of various kinds to escort the rig, including 46 coast guard, 14 cargo, 27 fishing ships, 14 tugboats, and five military vessels.-VNA
