Communication project on sea, island sovereignty approved

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has recently approved a project to raise public awareness of safeguarding sovereignty and sustainable development of Vietnam’s seas and islands.

Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister NguyenXuan Phuc has recently approved a project to raise public awareness of safeguarding sovereignty and sustainabledevelopment of Vietnam’s seas and islands.

The project will be carried out incentrally-run cities and provinces, countries which are home to largecommunities of Vietnamese people and those with traditional friendly ties withVietnam.

It aims to update Party guidelines and Statelaws on Vietnamese seas and islands via the mass media, especially raising the awarenessof exploitation, use and maintenance of sea and island environment andresources among coastal population.

Accordingly, 90 percent of history andgeography teachers in secondary and high schools, reporters and editors inpress outlets and publishing houses, staff members of television and radio stationsin communes and districts will be provided with Party guidelines and State lawson Vietnamese seas and islands and trained in communication skills.

All students in schools, colleges anduniversities will learn about Vietnam’s sea and island sovereignty.

Besides domestic policies and laws, majorcontents include international laws, bilateral and multilateral cooperationagreements with countries and international organisations regarding seas andislands, historic and legal evidence affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty overTruong Sa (Spratly) and Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelagoes and the role andpotential of Vietnamese seas and islands.

The project also hopes to populariseeconomic development in seas and islands, especially in oil and gasexploitation and processing, construction of coastal economic, industrial andprocessing zones in tandem with coastal urban development, environmentprotection, laws on aquaculture, offshore fishing and fishery logistics, searchand rescue and incentives for fishermen, among others.-VNA
