Jakarta (VNA) – The Centre for Southeast Asian Studies and the Dutch embassy in Indonesia co-hosted the international conference themed “Human Rights, Migration and Development in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations” in Jakarta on December 12.

The event was held on the occasion of International Human Rights Day (December 10) and the 50th founding anniversary of ASEAN, attracting over 100 delegates from research centres, ministries, agencies, international and non-governmental organisations.

It aimed to raise the ASEAN member states’ awareness of migrant workers’ impact on the regional socio-culture till 2025, and the importance of human rights protection in migration for employment purpose.

Speaking at the event, Dutch Ambassador to Indonesia Rob Swartbol and Indonesian Minister of Manpower Hanif Dakhiri said raising awareness of promoting and protecting human rights of migrant workers is one of the important factors to successfully build a safe and prosperous area in the region via improving local lives.

Dinna Wisnu, Indonesian Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) quoted the UN statistics 2015 as saying that nearly 3.3 percent of the world population (or 244 million people) move to new living and working areas each year, which is also one of the key priority programmes of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights.

AICHR noted that there remains the gap in terms of social welfare provision, rights to access to health care services, and salary to female workers.

During two sessions, participants discussed initiatives to protect human rights and migrant workers for employment purpose, safe migration for workers, and rights of migrant workers, among others.-VNA
