The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) on September 19 announced that all of its 68 elected lawmakers are ready to attend the opening session of the new parliament, slated for September 23, despite the opposition's warning of a boycott.
In the announcement, CPP also expressed respect to King Norodom Sihamoni and said its parliamentarians will take the King’s call to attend the session under his chairmanship.
Meanwhile, in his social network account, President of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) Sam Rainsy stated that his party keeps the stance of not joining the parliament.
CNRP is currently considering the sending of a proposal to the King, asking him not chair the session as CPP and CNRP have yet reached consensus.
The same day, the Cambodian Government called on people to respect the King and abide by the Constitution.
The government affirmed that it respects the right of expressing opinions and information freedom of citizens, and asked them to realise the rights in accordance with the law without affecting the King’s prestige.
On September 18, King Norodom Sihamoni called on both CPP and CNRP to demonstrate national unity and solidarity and join the first session of the fifth National Assembly.-VNA
