Cuban President Raul Castro has praised the country’s economic achievements over the first six months of this year.
He was speaking at the 5 th session of the VIIth National Assembly in the Cuban capital city of Havana on August 1.
The country’s achievements were attributable to the increasing number of foreign visitors, record breaking outputs in oil and gas exploitation, an improved commercial balance as well as a slight increase in export turnover and a successful energy saving campaign, said the President.
He announced several economic measures to help update Cuba ’s economic model, which has been badly affected by the US ’s embargo, the global economic crisis and a series of severe storms since 2008.
President Raul Castro revealed the outcome the recent meeting of the Council of Ministers, including the expansion of the private economic sector and reduction of the number of state employees, which he said are both important moves that will contribute to bolstering the country’s socialist system.
Later the same day, the Cuban National Assembly (NA) voted to change the nation’s administrative map. Subsequently, the country will create an additional province to total 15 provinces altogether./.
