Hanoi (VNA) – A total of 500 Yoga teachers and students participated in performances in response to International Yoga Day (June 21), which took place in the central city of Da Nang on June 19.

The programme was jointly held by the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations, the Vietnam-India Friendship Association of Da Nang city, and the Indian Embassy in Vietnam.

Its objectives were to improve participants physically and mentally and strengthen friendship and cooperation between the central city and India.

Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness.

Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.

Recognising its universal appeal, on December 11, 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as International Yoga Day.
