Young Vietnamese tennis player Nguyen Hoang Thien on February 14 defeated Pakistan’s Muhammad Abid 3-0 to bring the Vietnam team an overall draw with Pakistan as the regional 2014 Davis Cup tournament qualifiers opened in the Central Highlands’ Lam Dong province.
Earlier in the day, Vietnam’s Ngo Quang Huy was defeated 0-3 by Pakistan’s Aqeel Khan in a dramatic clash, meaning Thien had to win to avoid an unhappy first day for the hosts.
Under pressure, he delivered and drew the sides level. He was rewarded with a win bonus of 1,000 USD by the Vietnam Tennis Federation to spur him on in the next rounds of the tournament.
Vietnamese men’s doubles pair Le Quoc Khanh and Trinh Linh Giang will face Pakistan’s Aqeel Khan and Qureshi Aisam on the second competition day on February 15.
The two Pakistani players are one of the leading doubles pairs in the Asia-Pacific region rankings.
The overall winners of four singles matches and one doubles match will decide who the winners are in Group II of the Asia-Pacific regional qualifying round.-VNA
