Denmark’s foreign policy has traditionally given political and economic priority to Vietnam in the hope of further strengthening the close ties between the two nations, Danish Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation Mogens Jensen said at the Vietnam – Denmark business workshop in Hanoi on January 19.

The event was part of Jensen’s agenda during his visit to Vietnam from January 19-22 with aims to boost trade through meetings with Vietnamese and Danish firms.

Since 1994, Denmark has offered 1.3 billion USD in official development assistance to Vietnam. Trade between the two nations has grown by 75 percent since 2009, with Vietnamese investment in Denmark doubling and Danish capital flows into Vietnam tripling.

Denmark is currently the third biggest EU exporter to Vietnam with over 130 companies doing business in the Southeast Asian country, primarily in wooden furniture, garments, clean energy, information and communications technology, electronics and software, maritime transport and logistics, and food, said Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh.

Thomas Bustrup, Deputy Director General of the Confederation of Danish Industry, was hopeful that the upcoming free trade agreement between Vietnam and the EU will mark a new turning point for Vietnamese and Danish economies.

The same day, Deputy Minister Anh and Danish Minister Jensen witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on oil and gas processing between Denmark’s Haidor Topsoe Company and the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PVN).
