Hanoi (VNA) – A 5.4 magnitude earthquake rocked the Philippines’ southern province of Zamboanga del Norte on January 7.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the centre of the quake was 35km deep in the Zamboanga del Norte town of Baliguian, on the Zamboanga peninsular in Mindanao.
Locals in Zamboanga city felt the quake.
Earlier the same day, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake jolted a region about 174km west-northwest of Ternate city in the Moluccas of Indonesia.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit at a depth of 60.5 km.
No tsunami alert was issued.
Currently, experts have yet to define if there is any connection between the two quakes. –VNA
