Malaysia will install a 141 km-long electric fence along its border section with Thailand in Kelantan state to curb cross-border crimes, according to Malaysian Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Ahmad Zahid said the project will include 121 kilometres of river boundary and 20 kilometres of land boundary and it is expected to be completed in three years.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak has agreed in principle on the project, the minister said, adding that his ministry will continue discussions and collecting opinions from relevant ministries, including the finance ministry.
He said the construction of the fence is important to eradicate smuggling activities, especially drugs, firearms and human trafficking.
In a recent press conference in Tunjung Kelantan, Ahmad Zahid said it is necessary to discuss the project with the Kelan tan state’s governor, because the fence will involve land belonging to the state government.-VNA
