Evening of chamber music, ballet awaits

The HCM City Ballet and Symphony Orchestra (HBSO) will entertain the city this weekend with a chamber music and ballet performance by young and veteran Vietnamese and Republic of Korea (RoK) talents.

The concert will open with music by Chopin. Veteran cellist Nguyen Tan Anh and female pianist Pham Dieu Thao will play Cello Sonata in G Minor, Op. 65, a four-chapter sonate for cello written by the Polish composer in 1846.

Young violinist Tang Thanh Nam and his RoK colleague, female pianist Eun Young-joo, will then play Sonata in A Major, a romantic piece by Belgian composer Cesar Franck.

Cellist Anh, pianist Ly Giai Hoa and violinist Nguyen Truc Thuyen will follow with compositions by Russia 's Rachmaninov.

They will play Trio No1 "Elegiaque" in G minor, the one-chapter work written in 1892 when the composer was just 19.

The second part of the programme will feature performances by HBSO ballet dancers.

Hong Chau, Duc Nhuan, Phi Diep, Hai Anh and Quynh Ly will perform solo pieces set to music by Russian and French composers.

They will also perform Monsoons, a work that combines contemporary and classical dance forms to tell a story of love and passion through four seasons.

Monsoons is choreographed by Ha The Dung who has worked with younger choreographers Nguyen Phuc Hung, Nguyen Phuc Hai and Phan Thi Hong Chau, who have returned home after training courses overseas.

"All our dancers will strive for their best portrayal of love and passion through dance," said Dung who is a ballet dancer himself. He said they hope to popularise their art among local audiences.

Dung, headmaster of the HCM City Dance School , has attended dance and choreography courses in prestigious schools in Russia , France and the Netherlands .

The event will be held at 8pm March 19 night at the HCM City Opera House, 7 Lam Son Square , District 1.

Tickets, from 150,000 VND (6.5 USD) to 250,000 each, are available at the theatre's box office. /.
