Experts: Production chains vital for pork industry

Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnam’s pig farming industry should be restructured in asustainable and competitive manner with a focus on establishing productionchains for farmers and businesses, experts have said at a recent conference in Hanoi.

NguyenNgoc Hoa, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry andTrade, said developing production chains is important for the pig farmingindustry.

Hetook HCM City as an example. The city has launched a safe pork production andsupply chain in which each farmer or trader needs to have their pork certifiedas safe and with a clear origin by municipal authorities if they want to jointhe chain.

Thechain will help farmers and traders better advertise their products and cutcosts and help authorities trace pork origins more effectively, he said. 

DaoQuang Vinh, director of a food company in Hanoi, agreed. He urged more leadingenterprises and cooperatives to join the chains. It is also necessary toexplain the importance of joining the chains to farmers, he said.

Duringthe event, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuongmentioned small-scale farming with low productivity and lack of production andstorage technologies as major challenges facing the domestic pig farmingindustry.

Hestressed the need to expand organic farming while restructuring productionmethods, with priority given to launching pork production chains.

Otherparticipants at the forum suggested ministries and sectors build acommunications system to provide farmers and businesses with information about marketdemand to successfully develop pork production chains.-VNA
