The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has estimated Cambodia's 2014 rice exports will increase slightly to 1.2 million tonnes, including rice sold through cross-border trade to Vietnam and Thailand.
According to a report released recently by the FAO, Cambodia exported almost 120,300 tonnes of rice during the first four months of this year, up 1.5 percent from the same period in 2013.
The FAO forecasts that Cambodia will produce 9.5 million tonnes of farm produce during this year’s two main crops, with 7.4 million tonnes of the volume unhusked rice.
In recent years, Cambodia’s agricultural sector with the spearhead of rice production, accounted for nearly one-third of the country’s GDP. The sector also importantly contributes to promoting economic growth, poverty reduction and improving living conditions for Cambodian people.-VNA
