17-year-old swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien created a piece of history of Vietnamese women swimmers at regional games by successfully securing a gold on December 12 at the ongoing 27th SEA Games.
Vien won the gold in the women’s 200m individual medley, which is the first ever that Vietnamese female swimmers recorded at Southeast Asian games.
She finished in 2 minutes and16.22 seconds, pocketing the 15th gold medal for the Vietnamese team at the event, which is taking place in Myanmar.
Thai athlete Pawapotako Phiangkhwan got the silver medal whilst another Vietnamese swimmer Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen just ranked fifth.
In the last regional games held in Indonesia in 2011, Anh Vien only secured two silvers despite many expectations.
The juvenile swimmer has made breakthrough progress especially since she got a slot to Olympic London 2012 and won one silver and one bronze at the Asian Swimming Championships, pinning hopes to shine further at the ongoing SEA Games.
