First Arabic-Vietnamese dictionary debuts

The first Arabic-Vietnamese dictionary made its debut at an event to mark World Arabic Language Day (December 18) held by the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Vietnam in Hanoi on December 17.

Hanoi (VNA) – The first Arabic-Vietnamesedictionary made its debut at an event to mark World Arabic Language Day (December 18) held by theSaudi Arabian Embassy in Vietnam in Hanoi on December 17.

Representing the embassy at the event, Counselor Hamoud Naif S. Almutairi said SaudiArabia attaches great importance to preserving and developing the Arabiclanguage, and the country has made significant contributions to enhancing thestatus of the language, including efforts to have Arabic recognised as oneof the six official languages of the UN, and one of the languages usedofficially in meetings of the UNESCO Executive Board.

As part of the above-mentioned efforts, the embassy has paid attention to popularisingthe language through collaboration with the embassies of other Arab countriesand Vietnamese educational institutions that are currently teaching Arabic, hesaid.

Ithas supported the compilation of the dictionary to create the best possibleconditions for the relevant teaching and learning activities, thus benefiting notonly students and teachers but also Vietnamese people living and working inArabian countries, the diplomat stressed.

According to the Chairman of the Council of the University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS) - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Do Tuan Minh, as the first higher education institution inVietnam to open bachelor's degree programmes in Arabic, ULIS has made significantcontributions to the training of human resources in this major over thepast 27 years.

Theuniversity has made great efforts in the compilation project, aiming to serve Arabic language teaching activities within the institution and providesupport for individuals who are interested in learning this language, he said.

As part of events commemorating the World Arabic Language Day, the Saudi Arabia Embassy held anArabic poetry recitation contest for Vietnamese students studying at ULIS and Universityof Social Sciences and Humanities (HCMUSSH) - HCMC National University./.
