A 60 sq.m ceramic picture of brightly coloured lines and designs made by painter Nguyen Thu Thuy was unveiled on July 14 in Long Bien district in Hanoi city, as part of the “Ceramic road along the Red River” project to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi.
Thanks to the creative efforts of artists in and outside the country, and to the financial support of the municipal People’s Committee and companies and organisations including the US Ford Foundation, the Singaporean Art Action fund, among others, over the past year, a 1,500 sq.m embankment along the Red River has been decorated with colourful mosaics.
The 6km-long ceramic road, running run from Au Co Avenue through Nghi Tam, Yen Phu, Tran Nhat Duat, Tran Quang Khai and Tran Khanh Du roads, will comprise 21 sections of ceramic pictures, each featuring a unique theme, including historical periods of decorative arts in Vietnam, modern Ha Noi painters, international artists, and artists from all over the country, as well as art by children.
Apart from the assistance of Michael Geertsen, an artist from Denmark, and Dominique de Miscault from France, many other artists from the UK, the US, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Poland have registered to join the project.
Inspired by this project, an artist from Argentina has called for a creation of a new ceramic wall to mark the 200th anniversary of the May Revolution of 1810 in her country.
The first 10 sq.m ceramic mosaic will be made by “Ceramic road along the Red River” project artists to present to Argentina.
Nguyen Thu Thuy said the project will strive to make it into the Guiness Book of World Records for the world’s longest ceramic picture by 2010./.
