A delegation of 25 Myanmar parliamentarians is on a five-day visit to Singapore to learn about Singapore's model of governance and exchange views on broadening linkages between the two countries.
The visit marks the first parliamentary exchange between Singapore and Myanmar .
The delegates on May 21 called on Speaker of Singapore’s Parliament Halimah Yacob.
During their stay in Singapore until May 23, the Myanmar law makers will call on senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Trade, the Housing and Development Board, and other agencies. They will observe Meet-the-People sessions hosted by several MPs from different constituencies.
Singapore and Myanmar enjoy good bilateral relations and cooperate closely within ASEAN. Myanmar is among the top 10 recipient countries under the Singapore Cooperation Programme (SCP). Singapore was also one of the first countries to offer assistance to Myanmar following Cyclone Nargis in 2008.
The two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on technical cooperation programme during President Thein Sein's State visit to Singapore in January 2012. Under the programme, Singapore will share its developmental experiences and provide training to Myanmar in three key areas, namely economic development, human resource development, and public administration.-VNA
