A workshop to build a comprehensive resilience plan for integrated flood risk management in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho was jointly held by the World Bank (WB) and the provincial People’s Committee on May 10.
The workshop aims to assess flood risks in Can Tho, thus preparing a comprehensive resilience plan into 2030 and measures for sustainable flood management.
According to the WB, Can Tho is one of the Mekong Delta localities most heavily impacted by climate change and sea level rises.
In recent years, the city has seen unusual flooding. Levels rose from 1.79 metres in 2000 to 2.03 metres in 2007 and 2.15 metres in 2011. It is not the result of flooding upriver but from tidal surges and poor drainage in the region.
Located in the lower Mekong region, Can Tho is regularly affected by natural disasters, of which flooding, riverbank erosion, whirlwinds, thunder and lightning have the greatest impact on the lives of the city’s residents.
At the event, participants said that Can Tho should improve its main roads and roadside housing, combine environmental monitoring with environmental protection and sustainable development, and pay attention to climate change in its urban development plans.-VNA
