Water levels in the Aek Mataand Aek Ranto rivers rose suddenly and overflowed on April 28 afterheavy rain, triggering the floods, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, directorof the data and information centre under Indonesia’s NationalDisaster Mitigation Agency.

The military and volunteers helped flood victims evacuate the area, he added.

The impact of the flash floods is being assessed, he said.

Indonesia is frequently hit by floods when it rains heavily. InFebruary, 2013, flash floods in Mandailing Natal killed dozens of peopleand damaged infrastructure. -VNA
