Flash floods have injured 10 people and forced nearly 1,000 others to leave their homes in Mandailing Natal of North Sumatra, Indonesia, announced an Indonesian official on April 29.
Water levels in the Aek Mata and Aek Ranto rivers rose suddenly and overflowed on April 28 after heavy rain, triggering the floods, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, director of the data and information centre under Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency.
The military and volunteers helped flood victims evacuate the area, he added.
The impact of the flash floods is being assessed, he said.
Indonesia is frequently hit by floods when it rains heavily. In February, 2013, flash floods in Mandailing Natal killed dozens of people and damaged infrastructure. -VNA
