The UN-backed war crimes tribunal on Feb. 21 selected Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch, commander of the Khmer Rouge’s Tuol Sleng prison, to be a witness against defendants at the trials of other Khmer Rouge members.
The Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) spokesperson Neth Pheaktra said that Duch will be at the Mar. 21 trial to talk about activities and relations in the former Cambodian regime, particularly the roles of “Case 002” defendants Nuon Chea, Ieng Sary and Khieu Samphan.
Duch has been in custody at an ECCC prison to allow him to become a trial witness since ECCC gave him a life imprisonment sentence for war crimes and crimes against humanity on Feb. 2.
ECCC imposed him a 35-year sentence in July 2010. However, that sentence was squashed as it did not reflect the seriousness of his crimes.
From 1976-1979, Duch oversaw the deaths of at least 12,272 victims but estimates have placed the number as high as 16,000. - VNA
