Former Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew passed away early on March 23 at the age of 91, the Prime Minister’s Office of Singapore said in a statement.
The Former PM passed away peacefully, the statement said.
He has been hospitalised since February 5 this year because of severe pneumonia and was on life support and antibiotics at the special care unit of the Singapore General Hospital.
The reduced health distanced himself from the public recently. The former PM’s latest public appearance was at the 60th founding anniversary of the People’s Action Party last November.
Lee Kuan Yew was the founding Prime Minister of Singapore and the father of the current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. He has been widely credited with turning Singapore into one of the most affluent economies in Asia within three decades.
He was Singapore’s Prime Minister from 1959 to 1990 and is viewed as an influential politician on the island nation.-VNA
