Expert are sharing information security initiatives at an exhibition in Hanoi.
Chief security officers, chief information officers, and informationtechnology professionals are attending the Security World 2014Conference & Exhibition in Hanoi to discuss and share informationsecurity initiatives.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on March18, Nguyen Tat Loi, the director of IT Department from the GeneralDepartment of Technology & Logistics under the Ministry of PublicSecurity, stated that the annual event will offer updates togovernmental agencies, businesses, and organisations on the latesttechnology trends and practical solutions.

According to the TrendMicro report, during the second and third quarter of last year, Vietnamranked first in the list of countries affected by online bankingfrauds. Security risks loom large over mobile device users, as thenumber of malicious and high-risk apps targeting the Android platformreached the one-million mark in September 2013. Vietnam ranked third inthe list of top countries impacted by malicious Android app volumes.

Arecent report by IDC in January 2014 forecast that informationtechnology spending in the Vietnamese market will see a growth rate of15.5 percent, and the total market revenue is expected to reach 13.05billion USD in 2014.

Anthony Lim, a member of the ApplicationSecurity Advisory Board for ISC, the largest non-profit membership bodyof certified information and software security professionals worldwide, remarked that the internet is useful and entertaining, but it was also adangerous place with no laws.

He emphasised that free publicWifi could pose a danger to the users and suggested employees not tocasually click on links and stay abreast with the latest changes in thesocial media.

"Please make sure that no one uses 1234 or abcd aspasswords. When you log onto any site, please check if it is a validone," Lim pointed out.

Currently, people access data fromdifferent devices, such as computers and smartphones. Lim added thatenterprises should build a security culture by ensuring that the staffmembers do not create multiple copies of confidential documents.

He stressed that computer security was not only about technology, but also encompassed human and policy components.

Concurringwith Lim's idea, Ngo Viet Khoi, the country manager of Trend MicroVietnam & Cambodia cited the example of users clicking on a linkshowing the position of the missing Malaysian Airlines MH370.

"Whenthe users click on share, they will download malware. It is aboutsocial engineering, like Lim referred before," Khoi stated.

Accordingto Khoi, hackers now focus on carrying out advanced persistent attacksthat intend to penetrate targeted firms and organisations using severalmethods, such as emails with malicious programme attachments orexploiting vulnerable users in order to steal information or hijackcomputers communicating with external parties.

"Many firms feelsafe with anti-virus software installed on their devices, but they arewrong. In the past, everyone used Windows Explorer to surf websites andcompose documents on Microsoft Office. However, currently, there areseveral choices and risk management cannot be fully achieved," heasserted.

Security World has been held in Vietnam for the pasteight consecutive years since 2007. The event is co-organised by theGeneral Department of Logistics & Technology under the Ministry ofPublic Security, Vietnam Computer Emergency Response Team under theMinistry of Information and Communications, and International Data Group(IDG) under the endorsement of Ministry of Public Security.-VNA
