Ha Tinh police arrest 16 people following disturbance

The police in central Ha Tinh province has launched legal proceedings against and arrested 16 people involved in a recent disturbance at the Vung Ang Economic Zone.

The suspects are beinginvestigated on charges of causing public disorder, intentionallyinjuring others, destroying and stealing assets, said Colonel Bui DinhQuang, deputy chief of the provincial police, on May 18.

Earlier, the local police also started legal proceedings against apublic disorder case at the zone’s Son Duong Formosa deepwater portproject on May 14.

The province’s competentagencies are conducting further investigations and encourage people tohand in images and video clips on the incident to be used as legalgrounds for strictly punishing the offenders under the law.

Many foreign experts and workers were discharged from hospital on May17 and 18. They expressed thank to doctors and nurses at Ha Tinhhospitals for their timely care and treatment.

Both foreign and domestic workers have resumed normal work at the Formosa project.

In these days, at the Formosa project’s construction site,Vietnamese and foreign workers have returned to work under theprotection of authorised forces.

On May 14, a parade in theVung Ang Zone opposing China’s illegal placement of a drilling rig inVietnam’s exclusive economic zone heir parade turned into a conflictwith foreign experts and workers at the Formosa project.

Taking advantage of the situation, some people setfire to the houses of foreign workers and stole company assets,machinery and other equipment.

The province mobilised 600 police and military officers to disperse the crowds and take foreign workers to safe places.-VNA
